The massive structure of Sainte-Marie Cathedral in Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges is lightened by fourteen slender buttresses. With the pyramidal block of the bell tower-keep of the monument, they crown the rise of the roofs towards the top of the old city. Sainte-Marie Cathedral was the seat of the diocese of Comminges until 1801, when it became the cathedral of the archdiocese of Toulouse. The monument is today known as the parish church of Sainte-Marie and has been listed as a Historical Monument since 1840.
