Located in the heart of the Fontfroide massif, a preserved area of 4000 hectares of unspoiled nature, the Fontfroide Abbey was founded in 1093 by Benedictine monks. The Abbey was subsequently attached to the Order of Cîteaux in 1145 and, following this event, became one of the most powerful Cistercian abbeys in Christendom. The sumptuous Cistercian ensemble dating from the 12th and 13th centuries is surrounded by a typically Mediterranean landscape and bathed by the Fontfroide stream.
