Accessible from Cannes by a single shipping company managed by the island's monastic community, Notre Dame de Lérins Abbey has been located on Saint-Honorat Island since the 5th century. Today, the monumental complex consists of a fortified 11th-century monastery erected on the southern tip, a 19th-century abbey, and seven chapels spread around the island's perimeter. Its 99 acres (40 ha) territory also houses furnaces intended, during the Napoleonic era, to heat cannonballs to set fire to enemy ships.
