Korowai house under construction
1
0
Korowai houses are built of wood, bamboo and leaves at the top of vigorous trees (Banyan or Wanbom) at an average height of 26 to 39ft (8-12m) to escape mosquitoes and other predators. Their floor is composed of logs covered with sago bark and their walls are made of bark or braided foliage. Their roof is covered with palms. Built within 1 or 2 days, the houses grouped in clearings last 3 to 5 years and are abandoned when the surrounding forest no longer supports the families who inhabit them.
