Kopjes are important for the ecosystem serving as habitat for different kinds of flora and fauna. Lions use them as vantage points, to bask in the sun or to hide their cubs. Reptiles and insects thrive here thanks to the ample hiding spaces and the abundance of food. Trees like the rock fig grow out of the cracks of the rocks.
