Dominating the South African savannah, the kopjes consist of very hard granite capable of resisting erosion from rain and tropical winds. Aside from offering a scenic contrast to the surrounding grasslands, they provide habitat for many species because of the presence of a various plants, caves, rocky cavities, water and a vantage point for predators.
