Knee deep in the mud

The dangers of the Mont-Saint-Michel bay are real. Accidents happen every year. Quicksand or ‘lises’ are pockets of sand saturated with water that are found especially near the river beds. These areas offer less resistance to the walker: the water rises to the surface under the action of their weight. At first, they feel the ground give way under their feet and then find themselves stuck, sometimes up to their waist. Another trap is the fog of the banks, which occurs mainly in autumn or spring. It envelops the walker who has lost their bearings and wanders on the shore without finding their way.
