King Louis XI turned it into a prison

In addition to its strategic position between France and England, the rock of Mont-Saint-Michel has always linked the profane and the religious. During the 14th and 15th centuries, towers, various military constructions, and ramparts were installed to resist the English incursions of the Hundred Years’ War. In 1470, after a pilgrimage to the Mont, King Louis XI transformed part of the abbey into a state prison for monks and exiles. The abbey gradually declined, but the pilgrimages continued up until the Revolution.
