The male/female distinction is a constitutive element of the traditional Kanak society. Each sex is assigned different roles, powers, rights and duties. The differences between the sexes were also expressed in the division of labor and in the organization of separate living spaces, a use considered emblematic of female submission by the Western missionaries who promoted the model of the nuclear family.
