The imitative dances, which encompass a very wide range of forms and expressions, now constitute the bulk of Kanak dances. They continue to be practiced during major festivals and social gatherings and retain great similarities in their presentation with the dances observed in the early 20th century by the missionary pastor Jean Henri Maurice Leenhardt, one of the greatest specialists in Kanak culture.
