The doorframe is - with the ridge beam - an emblem of the large Melanesian hut. This carved houp wood (Montrouzeria cauliflora) bas-relief affixed on each side of the entrance supports the large hut of which it is both the guardian and the protector. The upper part of the doorframe represents the face of an ancestor while its lower part is decorated with geometric figures which vary according to the regions.
