Since the 1970s, the large colony of greater flamingos of the Western Mediterranean has chosen to breed on a Camargue islet. The greater flamingo is among the 400 bird species present in the region of southern France. The site on which the colony of 10,000 to 15,000 couples nests annually previously belonged to the Compagnie des Salins du Midi but has been the property of the Conservatoire du Littoral (Coastal Protection Agency) since 2008. The Camargue Regional Nature Park's teams provide rules and advice to help visitors observe the flamingos in the best conditions and without disturbing them.
