Whiteout in the Arctic

In polar regions, sometimes low sky and snow-covered ground blend imperceptibly into one another, obliterating the horizon. Because the light is so diffuse, the landscape seems wrapped in a white glow, landmarks disappear and it becomes easy to get lost. This atmospheric optical phenomenon is called “whiteout”.
