Even today, the Kanak social organization remains structured around the land distributed among the clans. It includes not only the mountains, the rivers, the sources but also the members of the tribes. The Kanak society is organized into customary districts also known as 'large chiefdoms'. These 'large chiefdoms' are headed by 'big chiefs' and divided into tribes and clans headed by 'little chiefs', like Jéhudit Pwidja (photo) for the Napoémien tribe.
