Great standing nude

The work of the painter and sculptor Jean Fautrier (1898-1964) presents two “possible attitudes towards reality”, as he himself said. No form of art can give emotion if it does not include a part of reality. Initially a figurative painter, Fautrier then evolved towards abstract painting. It was in the 1930s that the artist returned to sculpture. The dimensions of this “Grand nu debout” (‘Great standing nude’) in bronze (1935) remind us how important the female body was to him. The sculpture was acquired by the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar in 1991.
