In the beginning of the 20th century, there were more than 4,000 Cotentin donkeys (Equus asinus) on Normandy farms. They were used to transport cows’ milk and milkmaids, and to help in the crops. With a well-built anatomy, they have a woolly dove-grey coat with a brown cross on the back. They are naturally docile, although a little shy at first. They have always been at the service of humans and the donkeys of the Domaine d’Esthine now accompany hikers on the paths around the Mont-Saint-Michel bay.
