Inukshuk, an inuit symbol
2
0
The cairns, these stacks of stones marking the landscape, are the symbol of the Inuits of Canada, featured as a logo at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games. Called inukshuk in inuktitut, they were used for the hunting of caribou, to which they represented a human encirclement. Combining the morphemes, inuk human being and suk substitute, inukshuk literally means who has the ability to act as a human being. Symbol of the human will to resist the harsh laws of the universe, the inukshuk continue to be used as a landmark in the Arctic regions of Canada.
