The 2006 census registered 7,000 Inuit children under the age of 6 in Canada. Among them, 84% lived in one of the 4 regions of the Inuit homeland called 'Inuit Nunangat', i.e Nunatsiavut, Nunavik, Nunavut and the Inuvialuit region of the Northwest Territories, where the Inuit culture and history remain very much alive. Half of the Inuit children are raised there by at least 4 people ; usually their mother, father and grandparents or another relative.
