Twelve rusa deers (Cervus timorensis russa) from the island of Java in Indonesia were introduced into New Caledonia on February 6, 1870. Initially penned in the Yahoué school-garden farm, they were then released and gradually invaded the rest of Grande-Terre, the main island of the Caledonian archipelago.
