The littoral of Grande-Terre - the main island of New Caledonia - is subject to a significant tide. Its maximum tidal range, that is to say the difference in height between the high and low tides, is 5.9ft (1.80m). It delimits on the low coasts of the west and north of the island an intertidal zone in which salt marshes with mangroves, halophytes and tans have developed.
