Nicolas Rolin, the founder of the Hospices de Beaune, was architecturally inspired by the magnificence of the northern hospitals, in particular the Saint-Jean hospice of Valenciennes, the Notre-Dame hospital of Fontenilles, and the Biloke in Ghent.
