Inspired by Hagia Sophia

The first stone of the Sacré-Cœur (Sacred Heart) Church, designed by the architect Paul Abadie, was laid in 1875. After Abadie’s death in 1884, six architects succeeded each other in completing the building. The First World War postponed the consecration of the church until 1919 and the bombs of the Second World War shattered all its stained glass windows. The neo-Byzantine style of the basilica was inspired by Hagia Sophia in Constantinople or the San Marco Cathedral Basilica in Venice. Built to the north of the basilica, the 84-metre high campanile houses a 19-tonne drone, the famous “Savoyarde”, the largest active bell in the world.
