Inside the Royale Bugatti

At the peak of his glory, Ettore Bugatti imagined the largest, most expensive luxury car, the Royale Type 41. Intended for the influential figures of the time, it was 20 ft long (6 m), weighed 3 tons, and was three times as expensive as Rolls Royces. The Royale took its passengers to more than 100 mi/h (160 km/h) in exceptional comfort and almost complete silence. Yet, the interior could be considered sober. The front seats and door interiors are leather, and the rear is in colored velvet. The dashboard lacks some basic dials like the fuel gauge, speedometer, or ammeter. The Royale Type 41 is a highlight of the Cité de l'Automobile in Mulhouse.
