The large dimensions of Reims Cathedral allow accomodating a considerable crowd. The monument stretches over 1.64 acres (6,650 m²) and is 400 ft long (122 m). Initiated by Bishop Aubry of Humbert, who laid its first stone in 1211, the cathedral served as a coronation site for 31 kings and queens who came to seek divine legitimacy under its arches. Huge columns rise to the vault to 124 ft (38 m), surrounding the path leading to the altar. Reims Cathedral represents a symbol of Flamboyant Gothic.
