Rue de la Place de la Ville in Pont-Audemer is one of a kind. Two bodies of typical Norman houses are linked together by small dwellings suspended above the lane. In the Middle Ages, property taxes were calculated from the floor area. The inhabitants, therefore, found a way to increase the surface area of their home by adding more dwellings through corbel constructions or, as here, by joining two houses.
