Le maïs est une plante herbacée de la famille des Poacées, originaire du Mexique et introduite en Europe au 16ème siècle.
Lès inflorescences femelles, aussi appelées soies, sont apparaissent et sont prêtes pour la fécondation 5 à 8 jours après l’apparition des inflorescences mâles au sommet du plant de maïs.
Il y a 1 soie (voir photo) par futur grain de l’épi.
