In 2010, West Papua had 760,855 inhabitants spread over 26,1311sqmi (420,540km²), representing a density of 6.6 inhabitants/km2. It is the province of Indonesia which presents the lowest Human Development Indicator (HDI) with a poverty rate of 40% against 16.6% on national average. The variations between the indigenous peoples of the rugged Highlands and the large communities of transmigrants of the port cities are strong. The rates of maternal mortality and HIV infection are the highest in the country.
