Incubation temperature and sex determination
1
1
The leopard tortoise has a yellow and black carapace, with characteristic drawings reminiscent of the patterns of a leopard skin. After mating with a male, the female deposits up to about 20 eggs in a nest. The incubation temperature in the nest determines the sex of the hatchlings. The eggs exposed to a temperature between 26 and 30°C will be males, and those exposed to a temperature between 31 and 34°C will be females.
