There are two models for the traditional Alsatian village. The village-street (Strossedorf) consists of a series of houses built along a single street. The village-pile (Hüffedorf), such as Riquewihr, is considered the primitive form of Alsatian localities. The habitations often regroup around a central square or monument (church, tower, castle). A stream must cross the village for the inhabitants to build the wash house. The lands and forests around the town delimit its territory. They are often demarcated by boundary markers, some from Roman times.
