On March 31, 1889, Gustave Eiffel placed the highest flag in France at the top of the Eiffel Tower. It measures 24 ft (7.5m) wide by 14 ft (4.5m) high. 20 cannon shots are fired and all workers receive a commemorative medal. In the first week, 30,000 people climb the 1,710 steps because the hydraulic lifts are not completed until May 26. Every day, Mr Chobert, an arquebusier by trade, fires a cannon cut from the top to announce the opening and closing of the Universal Exhibition to the public.
