The cube of the Grande Arche de la Fraternité is 112 metres long, 106.9 metres wide and 110.9 metres high. President François Mitterrand chose the project of the Danes Johann Otto von Spreckelsen and Erik Reitzel out of 424 projects. Their project is a modern version of the Arc de Triomphe de l’Etoile, which combines black-tinted glass, silica fume concrete and Carrara marble. The Grande Arche de la Défense is also called the Arche de la Fraternité because it is dedicated to humanity. It was inaugurated on the occasion of the Bicentenary of the Revolution on 14 July 1989 in the presence of the entire G7.
