The Dôme des Invalides church is crowned with a dome 101 metres high and 26 metres in diameter, the construction of which was completed in 1706. On 28 August 1708, the architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart handed over the key to the church to Louis XIV who expressed great satisfaction. The highest building in Paris until the construction of the Eiffel Tower for the 1889 World Fair, the dome is dominated by a gilded square lantern and a fleur-de-lys spire ending in a cross. The lead-covered roof is divided into twelve gilded compartments decorated with military trophies in relief, in which skylights are concealed.
