Located in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, the Place Charles-de-Gaulle is famous for having the Arc de Triomphe at its centre. Inspired by the Roman Arch of Titus with a single arch, the Parisian monument is different in size (about 50 metres high, 45 metres long and 22 metres wide). Requested by Napoleon I in 1806, the Arc de Triomphe was completed in 1836 and inaugurated by King Louis-Philippe. The Unknown Soldier was buried on its platform on 28 January 1921. Since then, the flame of the tomb is rekindled every day at 6:30 pm. The Place Charles-de-Gaulle is the site of major national commemorations.
