Riquewihr extends at the outlet of the Sembach valley. It covers 4,210 acres (1,704 ha), including 3,140 acres (1,271 ha) of woods and 733 acres (297 ha) of vines. The Upper-Rhine village, located in the canton of Kaysersberg, is still home to numerous half-timbered houses from the 15th and 16th centuries. At its ban, the Kœnigstuhl hill (3,074 ft / 937 m) dominates the isolated hamlet of Ursprung. It is adorned with the ruins of the castles of Bilstein and Reichenstein, supposedly the oldest fortress in Alsace.
