Madine Lake is an artificial water site created to allow the city of Metz to face severe periods of drought. It extends in the Woëvre plain, in the heart of the Regional Nature Park of Lorraine. The Woëvre is a land of water and ponds, of which Madine Lake is the most important. The climate over the Meuse region is of degraded oceanic type with a continental influence. Winters are long, wet, and cold. It also results in thick fogs that sometimes entirely cover Madine Lake and its surroundings in autumn and spring.
