Located in the Luberon Regional Nature Park on the ocher road 2.4 mi (4 km) north west of Apt between Roussillon and the Provençal Colorado of Rustrel, Gargas is a village of almost 3,000 inhabitants marked for several centuries by the exploitation of ochre in the region. It constitutes the only place in the Vaucluse department to have ocher quarries (photo) still operating. They are accessible for visitors who can also discover the ocher museum in the heart of the village.
