Utah Beach is the westernmost of the five D-Day landing beaches. It stretches over 3,10 miles (5 km) on the northeast coast of the Cotentin peninsula. The main assault of June 6, 1944, took place in front of Saint-Martin-de-Varreville. General Roosevelt Jr., eldest son of former US President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919), conquered the WN5 strongpoint, a German defensive work, with 600 men. Utah beach opposed less resistance than Omaha as the German command did not consider the site to be favorable for a landing due to the marshes of its hinterland.
