Madeleine Beach in Sainte-Marie-du-Mont is known today as Utah Beach. This code name was given by the Allied forces when they added the beach to the 1944 landing plan at the request of British General Montgomery. Utah Beach is the most westerly beach of the five D-Day landing beaches. It encompasses the entire coastline of the Manche department involved in Operation Overlord and stretches from Beauguillot to Foucarville. While the operation was initially planned in Calvados, Utah Beach was added to facilitate the capture of the port of Cherbourg.
