Imported worship and ancestral rites
2
0
Converted to Christianity by European missionaries, the Polynesians have married their ancestral rites with the imported cults. In this civilization of oral tradition, the Bible has been translated and native priests trained. Ancestral symbols have been used : spring water, sacred because vital, has become holy water and churches have often been built on the ancient places of worship (marae) with their very stones. Today, the whole community, children included, participates in the services, only dogs stay at the door of churches.
