The insular populations of the five archipelagos of French Polynesia largely depend on the resources directly taken from the reef waters. The income due to the reef ecosystems can reach up to 15 tons of fish, crustaceans, molluscs and other invertebrates per square kilometer, not to mention the tourism and recreational activities developed around the coral reefs.
