The inclusion of the lagoons of New Caledonia and their associated ecosystems on the UNESCO World Heritage List is a true international recognition which gives these sites a symbolic belonging to the peoples of the whole world. The local populations, like this inhabitant of the region of Poindimié in the North and East coastal zone, are taken into consideration and involved in the preservation of this invaluable heritage through the management plans and committees and the creation of nature guards to enforce the environmental codes.
