The administrative chief-town of the Asmat country, Agats is located on the delta of the brackish waters of the Asewets river, in a tidal plain area where the water can rise up to 16.4ft (5m) above sea level during high tides. It therefore had to adopt a unique construction model with raised buildings and passageways thanks to wooden, and more recently concrete, structures. The population is supplied with water by rainwater and water pumped from another nearby river.
