The Northwest Territories stretch as far as the eye can see, empty of people. Their population density is indeed very low, its average of 0.036 inhabitants/km2 is a hundred times lower than the density of Canada and roughly comparable to that of Greenland. The majority of the inhabitants are concentrated south of the tree flora limit, in the forest-covered areas with soils rich in minerals.
