The Araucaria columnaris, or Columnar pine, is an endemic species found in large numbers on the Isle of Pines. It forms a huge column which can reach 197 ft (60 m) high! It was James Cook who saw these pines as far as the eye could see in 1774 and gave the name of the Isle of Pines without however daring to approach it...
