Charles of Gonzague was a wealthy and well-educated descendant of King Henry IV, born in 1580. At age 13, he accompanied his father on a visit to the Pope in Rome and discovered Florence and Renaissance architecture. In 1606, Charles of Gonzague inherited land in eastern France and decided to create a town named Charles-Ville. With a series of ordinances, he fixed the rules of construction, the proportions, and even the materials, inspired by Louis XIV's Versailles. On the buildings of the Place Ducale (Ducal Square), the oeil de boeuf (round windows) alternate with two-windows pediments. The square was classified as a Historical Monument in 1936.
