Polynesia has 118 islands ranging from atolls emerging from the surface of the ocean to volcanic islets through motus bristling with coconut palms. Spread over a maritime area the size of Europe and very far from the maritime routes, its population of only 270,500 inhabitants allows its ecosystems to benefit from rather positive bio-indicators with a pollution confined to the most populated areas and almost no heavy metal contamination.
