In France, the registration of cattle farms and of all the individuals who constitute them is compulsory. Births, deaths, and sales of cattle are subject to declaration, and any movement of animals must be accompanied by their identification documents. The registration is evidenced by the buckles marked with identification numbers that the cattle wear on the ears. They allow each animal to be individually identified throughout its life.
