In Inuktitut, the language of the Inuit people, there are at least a dozen basic words for “ice” and another dozen for “snow”; the snow used to build an igloo is called pukaangajuq. It must have a sufficient structural strength to be cut and adequately stacked. The best snow to use is snow which has been blown by the wind, which can serve to compact and interlock the ice crystals.
