The hydrography of the South region is dominated by the Rhône, a large navigable river which marks the limit with the Occitanie region, and by the Durance, its 199 miles (320 km) long tributary, which constitutes the main axis of penetration into the mountainous part of the region. There are also many minor rivers and torrents with sometimes seasonal flows varying with the altitude.
