The rifle, even with a wooden butt carved with Marquesan patterns mirroring the hunter's tattoos, is not the ritual weapon of the Eiao hunters who rather run after the game with the help of their dogs. Its telescope nevertheless allows the hunters to observe the animals from afar. They may also eventually shoot if a big wounded wild pig charges them.
